When Walls Get Ears is a series of performances. Eight artists play them in 8 outstanding monuments of architecture in the Netherlands:
- Klooster Ter Apel (1465) Monastery - Museum
- Radio Kootwijk (1923)
- Bergh Castle ( 13-th century - REN 1941)
- Broeker Veiling (1912 - ) sail through auction
- Sanatorium Zonnestraal (1926)
- Zuiderbad Amsterdam (1898) public baths
- Station Haarlem (1905) Waiting Room First Class of the railway station.
- De Cruquius (1849) Monument of steam technology

Movie, paper installations and music assisted the public to get acquainted with the buildings in all their aspects and to memorise these forever. The buildings are very different; consequently each performance got quite an individual character. Marco Kalkman made for each building a specific composition. Merlijn Twaalfhoven composed a piece around acoustics and space. Daan Manneke based his composition on the concept of construction as interface between music and architecture. The recorder ensemble Ratatouille (Heleen Gerretsen, Yvonne Hogt and Pauline Kolsteeg) has played these three and other compositions. Rob van den Broek installed in each building a dedicated construction of paper. The movies by Jeroen van Westen laid the connection between the different locations.

This DVD documentary gives an impression of the 17 performances made between August and November 2005.

"When Walls Get Ears" is a high level adventure, ...unmistakably successful in its intention to match architecture and music.

It creates an atmosphere of association and distinction. Only superlatives are applicable to the timbre, tuning and technical achievements of Ratatouille". (De Gelderlander)

A strong and substantially built artistic framework...a unique project. (Noordhollands Dagblad)
